because the less like us something is the less well we treat it. Don't believe me? look at the vegetarians who don't eat meat because it's cruel, well there has been evidence coming out that plants feel pain, and we have long known that they try to maintain their survival. but they are less like us than animals, so we don't think about them like that.

Once upon a time this was people who didn't look like us, sound like us, or think like us. Now most people identify all people as "like us" (note the most) and some people include animals in that too. fewer include all living things.

we no longer dehumanise races or religions or any large group of people and justify doing them harm, (for the most part anyway) but we do still treat the things that are less like us less kindly.

and so that is why aliens wont talk to us.
